    LIR

LIR is an art institution turn curator collective consisting of Mira Asriningtyas and Dito Yuwono. LIR Space was initially established in 2011 as an art space in Yogyakarta - Indonesia with an aim to build a supportive and positive environment for artists. Together they were a fellow of RAW Academie: CURA (RAW Material Company - Dakar, 2019).

LIR's projects are characterised by the multi-disciplinary collaboration and research-based exhibition in order to foster continuous transgenerational transmission of knowledge, memory, and history. LIR's recent project including "Curated by LIR" exhibition series (Yogyakarta & Jakarta, 2018 - 2023); "Transient Museum of a Thousand Conversations" (ISCP – New York, 2020 and OUR Museum – Taipei, 2023); and "900mdpl" (Kaliurang, 2017, 2019, & 2022), a long-term site-specific project in their hometown Kaliurang, an ageing resort village under an active volcano Mt. Merapi in order to preserve the collective memories of the people and create a socially-engaged archive of the space.

One of their long-term projects includes the 3rd edition of Pollination (2020‐2021)—a collaborative exercise between different institutions across Southeast Asia initiated by The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre. Titled "Of Hunters & Gatherers", whose research began pre‐pandemic in 2020, the project is composed of an exhibition, symposia and dedicated website in multiple sites online and offline, co‐hosted by MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum (Chiang Mai – Thailand), Selasar Sunaryo Art Space (Bandung – Indonesia), The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre (Ho Chi Minh City – Vietnam), with the support of SAM Funds for Arts and Ecology (Indonesia) and The Gray Centre for Art and Inquiry (Chicago).

In their personal practice, Dito Yuwono is an artist and curator focusing on the notion of collectivity, personal history as part of major historical narrative, and collective memory of a place. His work often addresses social issues through the production of site-specific work, interventional project, video, photography, and audio-visual Installation. In the past five years, Dito did numerous residencies as part of his site-specific artistic practice at institutions such as The Northern Centre for Contemporary Art (NCCA) Darwin – Australia; Ruangrupa – Jakarta; Jatiwangi Art Factory – Indonesia; GOLEB & Het Wilde Weten – The Netherlands; TIFA Working Studios– India; and Collectif BONUS-Nantes. His work has been exhibited in Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art – United States, Jimei X Arles International Photo Festival 2017, JIPFEST 2022, among others; and solo exhibitions in Kedai Kebun Forum, Ruang MES56, ruangrupa Gallery, and Cemeti Institute for Art and Society – Indonesia. He is currently one of the co-directors of Ruang MES56 and the curator of the international Jogja Fotografis Festival 2023 titled “Mengukur Panjang dan Lebar Sebuah Bingkai” (A Strategy to Measure a Frame) in Indonesia.

Mira Asriningtyas works as an independent curator and writer. She completed the Curatorial Program in 2017 at De Appel Art Center in Amsterdam. The idea of learning back from polycentric knowledge rooted in local context as an attempt to decolonize the knowledge system, promote ecological sustainability, and further investigate the remaining trace of colonialism have been central to her current research practice. She has curated exhibition and public programs off-sites and in art institutions such as De Appel Art Center (Amsterdam); Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam); Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Turin); KKF (Yogyakarta); ISCP (New York); MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum (Chiang Mai); Our Museum (Taipei) among others. Her essays have been published internationally in books, exhibition catalogues, monographs, journals, and online publications including PARSE Journal, Stedelijk Studies, and Ocula among others. In 2017, she initiated a biennale site-specific art project, “900mdpl” in Kaliurang– a historical resort village under Mount Merapi Volcano in Yogyakarta.

In 2024, Mira Asriningtyas and Dito Yuwono are appointed as the new directors of CEMETI - Institute for Arts and Society. Dito comes to this position from Ruang MES56, where he has been co-director since 2020, while for the first year, Mira will work on this directorship between the Netherlands and Indonesia. Over the years, LIR's institutional format has been perpetually renewed, and this directorship is taken as individuals-- as a new speculative practice of institution-making within the constellation of friendship across borders. At the same time, they will resume their individual practices as curator and writer (Mira) and as artist (Dito), practicing in, out, and around the art institution.

"900mdpl”:  a biennial site‐specific project in Kaliurang, an ageing   resort village under Mt.Merapi volcano. The 1st edition (2017) presented portraits of the community and their living space. The 2nd edition (2019) was an attempt to pinpoint the small village within the map of Indonesian bigger history. The 3rd edition (2022) was presented in two cycles, looking upon the relationship between mythology and how it affects the environmental sustainability of the area. www.900mdpl.com
