"Unlock"

The main work in “Unlock” was a ‘stop motion’ video and some drawings that shows the process of making it. The story was about a key maker. For the artist, Unlock was a process to open new experiences, just like a key to another door.

Karya utama dalam “Unlock” adalah sebuah video stop-motion dan gambar yang menunjukan proses pembuatannya. Kisahnya adalah tentang seorang pembuat kunci. Untuk sang seniman, Unlock adalah sebuah proses yang membuka pengalaman-pengalaman baru, layaknya sebuah kunci ke pintu yang lain.

INTERVIEW WITH WULANG SUNU

-What about your creative process?
+In 2010 I joined the Papermoon, taking part in Mwathirika performance. I was introduced to Ria and Iwan (Papermoon). There I went becoming the crew as a runner. Day by day, I was involved to more serious project making merchandise. Fortunately I study at DKV ISI years 2010. In Papermoon, I found so many new things, and I learnt the process there.

-Could you tell us a bit about Unlock’s ‘behind the screen’?
+Unlock performed the artwork formed a ‘stop motion’ video. Why it was called stop motion? It was because presenting pictures I felt still incomplete. There was the adding for ideas for truthfully, the idea about this picture had been inspired, months before the project was finished. Every time the idea appeared in my mind, I took it down in notebook. We always spent time from 7pm till 3 am to do the project during three weeks. I did not work alone; I cooperated with my interdisciplinary friends in the making of this stop motion. We named ourselves Jerikan. Besides that, in preparing Unlock, I watched a lot video of stop motion and read graphic novel as artistic references. Not only that, I also learnt the simple manual about the stop motion.

-Is there any effect from the process in Pappermoon to Wulang’s artworks in Unlock?
+Yeach... Papermoon itself has a strong affection to the artistic references and Unlock’s concept.

The story of Unlock, which is about a key maker, is retreated after my consultation with Ria. I did the same with the exhibition’s concept also helped by Iwan. Octo and Aul also helped me for the installation. Mainly, it is the result of process here and there with many people.

-Why Unlock, anything special about a key maker?
+Because a key maker opens something new. I interpret Unlock as a process to open new experiences for sure. It is an appreciation from my process and there will be a process to going through new things in doing the art.

-Why do you choose Lir as your exhibition partner? Does it give you anything to your creativity?
+It was because an offer from Dito at the first time. I agreed then. Luckily, I knew Mas Dito for a long time, but we never met from long time too, and when we met, he offered me to have an exhibition in Lir as my creativity. I believe that there will be many things given for me from this Lir evhibiton for it was my first time in a single exhibition. Before this, I joined some co-working exhibition such as Hewani exhibition at Via-via, Semua Bisa Jadi Macan exhibition at Galeri Biasa, and gathered exhibition in Festival Kesenian Yogyakarta in 2011.

-What’s your recent favorite activity?

+Studying, Learning in Papermoon, and playing around.

-Proses kreatif kamu bagaimana?
+Tahun 2010 aku gabung dengan Papermoon. Ikutan pentas Mwathirika. Aku dikenalkan teman ke mbak Ria dan mas Iwan (Pappermoon). Di situ jadi kru, jadi runner. Lama-lama dilibatkan lebih dalam, diajak bikin merchandise. Kebetulan aku kuliah di DKV ISI angkatan 2010. Di Pappermoon akumenemukan banyak hal baru, aku belajar banyak dari proses di sana. 

-Bisa cerita sedikit tentang proses di balik Unlock?
+Unlock itu menampilkan karya berupa video stop motion. Kenapa stop motion? Karena jika menampilkan gambar kurasa ada yang kurang. Proses pengerjaannya selama 2 bulan. Ada penambahan ide-ide sebab sebenarnya ide tentang pameran ini juga sudah hadir beberapa bulan sebelum dikerjakan. Tiap muncul ide, saya gambar atau tuliskan di notebook. 3 minggu dalam masa pengerjaan itu kami bekerja dari jam 7 malam sampai jam 3 pagi. Aku memang gak kerja sendiri, kerjasama dengan kawan-kawan lintas disiplin dalam pembuatan stop motion ini. Kami menamakan diri sebagai Jerikan. Selain itu dalam proses menyiapkan Unlock aku juga banyak menonton video stop motion dan membaca novel grafis sebagai referensi artistik. Juga baca buku manual sederhana tentang stop motion.

-Adakah pengaruh proses di Papermoon terhadap karya-karya Wulang di Unlock? 
+Ada. Papermoon sendiri punya pengaruh kuat terhadap referensi artistik dan konsep unlock. Cerita Unlock, yang tentang tukang kunci, itu kuolah lagi setelah konsultasi dengan mbak Ria. Konsep pameran juga kukonsultasikan dengan mbak Ria dan mas Iwan. Kalau untuk instalasi aku dibantu sama mas Octo dan mas Aul. Intinya, Unlock ini hasil dari proses di sana-sini dengan banyak orang. 

-Kenapa Unlock, kenapa tentang tukang kunci?
+Sebab tukang kunci membuka sesuatu yang baru. Unlock aku artikan sebagai proses membuka pengalaman baru demi mengalami. Ini adalah apresiasi dari prosesku selama ini dan akan datang, proses mengalami hal-hal baru dalam hal berkesenian. 

-Alasan berpameran di Lir? Dan apa yang diberikan bagi proses kreatif kamu?
+Awal mula pameran di Lir itu karena ada ajakan dari mas Dito, dari Lir. Lalu aku iyakan. Kebetulan aku kenal mas Dito sudah lama, tapi lama gak ketemu, ketika ketemu diajak pameran di Lir. Banyak sih aku rasa yang diberikan oleh pameran di Lir ini bagi proses kreatifku sebab ini adalah pameran tunggal pertamaku. Dan aku yakin pameran tunggal pertama itu penting bagi proses kreatif. Sebelum pameran tunggal ini, aku beberapa kali tergabung dalam pameran bersama misalnya, pameran Hewani di Via-via, pameran Semua Bisa Jadi Macan di Galeri Biasa, dan pameran bersama di Festival Kesenian Yogyakarta 2011. 

-Kesibukan Wulang sekarang apa?
+Kuliah, berproses di Pappermoon, dan bermain.
