Recycle Manga

"Recycle Manga"
Group Exhibition | Initiator: Mulyakarya Yk | September 1 – 5 , 2012

“Recycle Manga” is actually a workshop by Mulyakarya at Lir to recycle old comics to be a new story. The workshop’s result was found interesting, funny, and dangerous. At that time, Lir has a free time for few days before the regular exhibition and, almost impulsively, we exhibit the result.

-----

INTERVIEW WITH SANDY YUDHA

-Could you tell us about your creativity so far? And, what is Mulyakarya?
+I like drawing since I was a kid. I still remember when I was in the sixth year of primary school; I made a comic for the first time. I made it together with some of my classmates. When in junior and senior high school, I preferred playing music and drawing some pictures for school music event’s posters. After I have graduated from senior high school, I continue my study in ISI Yogyakarta. My study major is Graphical Fine Arts. So, up now, I am doing the process in visual art seriously.

Mulyakarya is a group contained people fallen in love with cartoons, comics, and unexpected experiment. It was found by Danang Catur and I in 2007. Mulyakarya also is generated by Prihatmoko ‘Moki’, Erwan Hersi Susanto ‘Iwank’, Upit, and Budi Kecil at present.

-Why do you choose comics (or possibly the other media) as your art media?
+There must be a reason for every media chosen. It can be a mural on the wall, posters in internet, drawing in canvas, installation in the center of park, etc. When creating comics, it should be because there was a text and drawings. To me, who also love writing, comic is a brilliant idea. In addition, if it becomes a book, a comic can be seen everywhere, and it can be collected by everyone with the reasonable price.

-Could you tell what spirit brought in “Recycle Manga”? Why “Manga”?
+Its spirit is spread from Mulyakarya’s hobby which loves observing the social environment and responds it. The Manga comic is numerous in Indonesia, so we want to play them. We recycle those former comics so they become a new story we want.

-What about the process “Recycle Manga” as an exhibition?
Recycle Manga is actually a workshop. The workshop’s result was found interesting, funny, and dangerous. So, it is better for us to exhibit it. Luckily, Lir has time in few days before the regular exhibition. So we use the time between it.

- What do you think at the first time you know Lir and what is your opinion with Lir as an alternative art space?
+The first time I come to Lir is when there was an exhibition (err, whose exhibition? I forget it). Then I knew Dito and Mira, and they become my friends till now. Lir has been good in being an alternative art space.

Just up to the management whether it will be strengthen by constructing communities and developing alternative activities, building professional rooms, or open for everyone and performing everything. But, whatever the choice is, it should be comfortable for Lir itself.

-Is there any particular reason why you choose holding “Recycle Manga” at Lir? Can you mention it?
+Lir made a schedule of series workshop in fasting month 2012. Mulyakarya was invited, and we gave the idea about Recycle Manga. So, before the Mulyakarya, there have been some workshops, such as writing, knitting, etc.

So, that is the reason; because Lir invited Mulyakarya. But I think Recycle Manga is properly held at Lir. There are many things in common; love reading, love making something unique, like humor, and enthusiastic with the new way of thinking.

-Does “Recycle Manga” give something to your creativity? Could you mention it?
+Yeah. I become more considerate and open seeing the mainstream situation.

-What is your next plan?
+Mm, my nearest plan is: a single exhibition, publishing book, and preparing Mulyakarya for the Next Wave in Melbourne. For the long period, just wait and see.

WAWANCARA DENGAN SANDY YUDHA

Saya suka menggambar sejak kecil.

4. Bagaimana proses "Recycle Manga" sebagai sebuah pameran?
Recyle manga sebenarnya sebuah workshop. Hasil workshopnya ternyata menarik, lucu-lucu, dan gawat. Jadi ada baiknya kita pamerkan. Kebetulan Lir punya waktu beberapa hari sebelum pameran reguler, jadi kita pakai di sela-sela itu.

6. Adakah alasan tertentu mengapa memilih mengadakan "Recycle Manga" di Lir? Jika ya, apa?
Lir membuat jadwal serangkaian workshop di bulan puasa 2012. Mulyakarya diundang, dan kita memberi ide tentang Recyle Manga. So, sebelum Mulyakarya, sudah ada berbagai workshop, misalnya penulisan, rajut, dll.

Jadi itu alasannya, karena Lir mengundang Mulyakarya. Namun saya pikir Recyle Manga cocok sekali dilakukan di Lir. Taste-nya nyambung... sama-sama suka membaca, suka bikin-bikin hal aneh, suka humor, dan antusias dengan pemikiran baru.
